Real Impact

Sustainable Schools

Duveneck Elementary School, Palo Alto, California

350 students, 50 staff, 1,600 community members reached.

440 lbs CO₂e avoided.

Students reduced food waste, staff reduced paper waste, and school community increased plastic film recycling.

Teachers appreciated that activities fit naturally into school learning without increasing workload.

The school custodian observed:

  • 30%+ improvement in food waste sorting

  • 50% reduction in paper waste in classroom bins

The program showed that when sustainability actions are simple, visible, and part of everyday routines, lasting behavior change follows.

“Sometimes we forget how easy it is to use both sides of the paper!”

Community Program

Albert-Eden Local Board Area, Auckland

Community members at Mt Albert Library and Epsom Library implemented sustainability actions over 10-weeks that reflected what mattered most to them.

Impact Areas: Food, Water, Energy, Transport & Travel, Shopping & Entertainment & Activities.

Participants inspired one another, became more involved in local environmental initiatives, and helped create a growing culture of sustainability across the community.

“I am now vigilant of my own actions that create a negative impact on the society and environment we live in. I will continue to educate my kids about the green concepts.”

— Thushava (Program Participant)

“Recycling soft plastic is definitely part of the habit now in our family.”

— Carmen (Program Participant)

“Thank you for putting me into this initiative for a larger cause. I have acquired some positive habits such as limiting my shower time and being conscious about doing things like recycling lids. It’s great to develop habits that are practical!”

— Shanti (Program Participant)

“I liked that the program is about more regular actions/lifestyle changes. We just need to be more mindful and then it’s easy to achieve.”

— Daniel (Program Participant)

“The program increased my interest in sustainable living. I learnt from others in my group and I also enjoyed sharing my actions and impact with my daughter.”

— Usha (Program Participant)

“I liked the practical approaches to reduce waste. Easy to follow and apply. My overall well-being has improved since starting the program. I am getting my kids involved in cooking and gardening activities with me.”

— Quoc (Program Participant)

“I am more particular about how I dispose of waste and making sure I recycle it right. After much consideration, I bought a second hand hybrid car over the program and am very conscious of how much I use it over public transport and walking.”

— Senthil (Program Participant)

Food Sustainability Amazing Race

Puketāpapa Local Board Area, Auckland

48 participants completed five flexible food sustainability challenges.

Each weekly theme offered multiple ways to take action, making it easy for people of all ages, schedules, and abilities to participate.

100% of participants said they would recommend the experience.

“I loved being challenged to think creatively about the use of food. I also appreciated there being options each week, as some of the challenges were not so achievable for us. Janani did a great job following up with us and encouraging us.”

— Lynette (Program Participant)

“What a fantastic way to encourage and challenge ourselves to reduce food waste. We discovered achievable ways to not only reduce waste, but also expand our food repertoire. It was a great way to get our children involved in the kitchen, too.”

— Jo (Program Participant)

“Liked that most of the things I needed for this race were within reach. Sustainability is doable, it doesn't have to be expensive, you just use what you have or tweak a few habits e.g. shopping local or choosing food with less packaging etc. I learnt that food sustainability is a lifestyle that's doable.”

— Rachel (Program Participant)
